Classical Mythology and Ancient Epics
Cost: $120/semester
Class Description: We will sail with Odysseus, sneak into Troy, and watch Thor wield his hammer! Students will read the classic mythological tales from Ancient Greece and Rome, and take a deep dive into the stories which formed the foundation of Western culture. This class will feel like a book club, with lively discussions and activities. There is no place for boredom here!
Grades will be based on in-class participation, weekly journaling, and literary analysis papers. The purpose of this class is to help the students understand what they’re reading, and learn to love great literature.
If read without guidance, these texts can be challenging to read. We provide the guidance that will make them come alive. Parents should be aware that in classical literature, some aspects of the stories may be bawdy and/or gory. Contact Lauren Andrews to discuss any concerns or questions you have concerning the content.
Lauren Andrews and former student Austin Bagley will be co-teaching this class. Sometimes they will both be in the classroom. Sometimes it will be one or the other teacher. Both Austin and Lauren bring a wealth of knowledge and understanding to this subject matter, and are passionate about helping young people fall in love with these epic tales.
This is a two-semester course, but semesters may be taken independent of each other.
