Elementary Biology (10am)
Cost: $120/semester
Class Description:
In Elementary Biology we will be introducing your students to the scientific discipline of biology. Students will learn about the characteristics of living things; how scientists sort living things into groups (taxonomy); cells and their makeup and functions; how plants make food; parts of a plant and their functions; life cycles of plants, butterflies, and frogs; microscopic organisms and how they move and eat; and more. The first semester we will be learning about everything from the smallest cells, up through the amazing world of plants! Second semester is the animal kingdom (we will be dissecting many different specimens!) and the human body. This is a very hands-on class! We will have the microscope out during most classes, I also have several smaller handheld microscopes that they will be using to look at things on a cellular level. I absolutely love this class! This is the first class that I stepped out of my comfort zone to teach here 4 years ago in this format. I am so thankful I did! I have loved teaching the elementary science classes and watching the students grow and retain so much of their knowledge from year to year as we learn the building blocks of SCIENCE!
Grades: 1st-5th grade
Instructor: Athena Bagley
Time: 10:00-10:50am
Required materials: 1” binder. They can also bring a set of colored pencils and a small magnifying glass, but I will also have these available in class.
We will be learning from Focus on Elementary Biology Student Textbook 3rd edition. Students will not need to purchase their own textbook.
